A Richmond man who claimed he had no knowledge of a robbery attempt was convicted by a jury Friday evening in Charles City. A Charles City man who allegedly fled the scene of an accident before being apprehended has been indicted on several charges. Jesse Edward Mondine, 38, of the 7900 block of Roxbury Road, was handed up indictments on two counts of unauthorized use of a vehicle, and misdemeanor counts of carrying a concealed weapon, DUI (second offense), refuse to take a breathalyzer (second offense), and driving with no license by a Charles City grand jury. New Kent Sheriff’s Office is investigating a vehicle crash into the Pizza Hut and Star Express in Bottoms Bridge Sunday afternoon. Around 3:30 p.m. a white van ran into the Pizza Hut at the corner of New Kent Highway (Route 249) and Star Express in Bottoms Bridge. Star Express has been reopened while Pizza Hut is expected to be closed for an undetermined amount of time. No injuries were reported. New Kent Sheriff’s Office deputies have charged the driver of the van with reckless driving, but their name has not been released. The accident remains under investigation.
Providing reliable Internet in Charles City has been an ongoing issue since 2014. Just like an Etch-a-Sketch, supervisors are electing to shake up a few things in order to expedite the process to provide the service to citizens by the middle of next year. An investigation by New Kent Sheriff’s Office in cooperation with Henrico County’s Police Department and the Virginia State Police has led to the arrest of four individuals who allegedly stole from motor vehicles. Hunter Waddell, 21, Jake Ragsdale, 27, Dillon Davis, 22, and Katilyn Holt, 25, all from Henrico, were all arrested on numerous crimes that took place between September 2018 and December 2018 in New Kent. The New Kent-Charles City Chronicle will no longer be distributed in post offices in Charles City. The postmaster general of the locality has elected not to allow the paper to be placed in the Charles City and Ruthville locations, citing that it violated a policy on solicitation. Citizens who usually picked up the newspaper at those locations may now pick them up from the box at Haupt’s Store.
A Hopewell man will spend the next four years in prison after receiving formal sentencing Friday afternoon in Charles City Circuit Court. David Alexander Booth, 36, of the 500 block of North 8th Avenue, was sentenced to 10 years in prison with six suspended on one charge of burglary. A Chesapeake woman has been charged for causing a crash Monday morning in on Interstate 64 in New Kent. Barbara N. Patino, 40, has been charged with following too close and driving with a suspended license stemming from the accident.
