Middlesex uses experience to take down Lady Panthers 15-1

Charles City’s Lady Panthers’ softball team is learning a lesson that while they are having a good season so far, getting through the Tidewater District is still a daunting task. Charles City fell 15-1 to the visiting Middlesex Lady Chargers in Tuesday afternoon action. Middlesex punched onto the scoreboard in the first, and began to add more in the top of the second.     After a strong season start, New Kent boys’ soccer team had to deal with the injury bug as they had to make adjustments throughout the season. Monday night’s Bay Rivers District contest against the visiting Grafton Clippers showed them that they are learning to deal with adversity.   • SNHU recognizes four local students on President’s List

    Four local students were named to the President’s List at Southern New Hampshire University for the Spring 2026 semester. Joseph Hampton and Carl Gardner, both of Providence Forge, and Mary Lyons and Natalie Johnston, both of New Kent, were recognized for their academic excellence during the semester. In order to be named to the President’s List, a student must be enrolled full-time and earn a grade-point average of 3.7 or higher.

  • Two earn Dean’s List recognition from Southern New Hampshire University

    Two local students were named to the Dean’s List at Southern New Hampshire University for the Spring 2026 semester. Deidra Otey, of Providence Forge, and Ashlei Selden, of Charles City, were recognized for their academic achievements. In order to be named to the Dean’s List, a student must be enrolled full-time while earning a grade-point average of 3.5 or higher.

  • No speakers address New Kent’s proposed $277 million budget

    There were no speakers on New Kent County’s budget at the regular board meeting Monday night. New Kent leaders received zero feedback from the public on the county’s $277,428,161 budget. The budget includes a four-cent tax increase on the real estate rate, which is slated at 58 cents per $100 of assessed value. New Kent’s proposed FY2026-27 budget increase is centered around a pair of Capital Improvement Plan (CIP) projects.   • Nansemond River’s defense stifles New Kent in non-district affair

    New Kent’s Lady Trojans bid on the pitch for win number 10 ran into a roadblock Friday night. The visiting Nansemond River Lady Warriors jumped out to a three-goal lead and never looked back as they defeated New Kent 3-1 in the May 8 non-district contest. Nansemond River dominated the onset of the contest, scoring moments into the contest for a 1-0 lead. Teammate Mayleen Bernal would punch goal number two on the scoreboard at the 30:27 mark as the Lady Warriors increased their lead. That advantage would last through the halftime break.   • Stewart appointed as District 1 representative to New Kent School Board

    Jessica Stewart has been appointed to New Kent’s School Board as the District 1 interim representative. The appointment came during the school board’s May 4 meeting.
