Two future graduates of New Kent High School will continue their volleyball careers at Richard Bland College. Trojan teammates Jada Evans and Sierra Hellebrandt will unite for the upcoming season at the college located in Prince George. Hellebrandt was an honorable district team member for the Bay Rivers Distict while Evans was a second-team all-state selection and first team region selection, setting a new school record with 1,075 career digs.
After winning a majority of meets this year, New Kent’s boys’ track and field team were upset by Bay Rivers District foe Tabb at the Class 3A Region A meet Thursday inside their home stadium. New Kent scored 130 points, settling for the runner-up position to the Tigers 141 points. Lakeland rounded out the top three with 111.75 points. New Kent’s Patrick Johnson, C.J. Reeders, Will Tolley, and boys’ 4×100 meter relay teams all brought home first place finishes. The path to a championship sometimes come with bumps in the road. For New Kent’s Lady Trojans, it wasn’t the Lakeland Lady Cavaliers. Behind eight strikeouts by Lady Trojan hurler Gracie Ellis, New Kent cruised to a 9-0 win over the visiting Lady Cavaliers. Confidence emerged early in the game thanks to patience at the plate. Charles City’s boys’ 4×100 meter relay team of Cameron Vaden, Steven Williams Jr., Robert Dobson, and Jordan Cotman ran a time of 44.42, edging out Franklin to claim first in the Class 1A Region A meet on May 24 at Sussex Central High School. The boys’ team scored 12 points to finish 11th at the meet. That’s what happened in the opening round of the Class 3A Region A contest against Lakeland. Charles City’s girls’ and boys’ track teams earned fifth place finishes, respectively, in the Tidewater District Championship meet that concluded Tuesday afternoon at West Point High School. Charles City’s boys’ scored 37 total points to earn their finish. Middlesex won the meet with 165 points, followed by King William’s 103, West Point’s 92, and Mathews’ 74. Monday afternoon’s Senior Day contest for the Lady Trojans pitted them against a York Lady Falcons team that hasn’t seen many victories this year. But the visitors pushed New Kent back into a corner for the first six-and-a-half-innings. That was until the bottom of the seventh inning.
