Powerhouse Mathews rocks Charles City in soccer opener

Entering year three, Charles City’s soccer program is looking to take the next step, transitioning from an exhibition squad to a competitive team. And while Monday afternoon’s contest against Tidewater District favorite Mathews’ Blue Devils didn’t result in a win, it didn’t deter the Panthers’ spirit either. Mathews’ Jonny McCann accounted for a hat trick, while five other players found the back of the net as the Blue Devils eased into a 9-0 win in the season opener for the Panthers. Trojans edged for team title at Charles City Invitational

New Kent’s boys’ track and field team were edged for the team title at Charles City’s Invitational meet last Saturday. The Trojans scored 71 points to finish runner-up at the meet, being edged by Clover Hill who took the title with 76 points. Thomas Dale rounded up the top three with 67 points. Charles City’s boys did not score at the meet. C.J. Reeders leap of 42’6½” and Kyle Coles airborne launch of 41’9” helped the Trojans go one-two in the boys’ triple jump. Growing up and graduating as classmates as part of New Kent High School’s Class of 2010, Lady Trojan head coach Maria Bates and Maury Lady Commodores head coach Nikki Jones friendship bloomed in the classroom and on the athletic field. Eight years later, their friendship would have to take a backseat for a couple hours as the two led programs onto the softball field Monday afternoon. New Kent’s Kyle Coles, Michael Gatling, and the boys’ 4×400 meter relay team emerged as event winners to lead the host Trojans to a team title at the 6th annual “Shoot the Gun and Run” Invitational at New Kent High School on Mar. 17. The Trojans scored 126.16 points to claim the team championship, outdistancing Bay Rivers foe Lafayette who finished as runner-up with 84 and J.R. Tucker’s 60, placing them in third.
