Sweet sweep as Lady Trojans defeat Tabb in season opener

New Kent Lady Trojans started their season out in style, sweeping the visiting Tabb Lady Tigers 25-20, 25-11, 25-18 to win the Aug. 29 opener. The first set saw both teams trying to get a feel for each other. The process resulted in the hosts leading 12-11 before the Lady Trojans scored six of the next seven points. Charles City’s big lead holds up to defeat Dukes in opener

For one half, it looked like the home-standing Charles City Panthers would have no problem disposing of the visiting Cumberland Dukes. But after allowing the visitors back into the contest, it was the Panthers’ ability to capitalize off a late mistake to clinch victory. Charles City jumped out to a 20-0 lead and held on for a 28-18 victory in the Aug. 25 season opening football contest. Early goal by Spotsylvania enough to topple Lady Trojans

They say defense wins championships. And while there were no titles on the line between New Kent and Spotsylvania in the Aug. 24 field hockey contest, the intensity felt like a playoff game. An early goal by Spotsylvania’s Sophie Sperry was the difference maker as the Lady Trojans lost 1-0 to the visiting Lady Knights. With Lady Trojan Ashby Holsapple injured, the speed and athleticism of the visitors were an issue all throughout the contest. Lady Trojans overwhelm Northumberland in opener

New Kent’s Lady Trojans started their 2017 field hockey season with a commanding 4-1 win over the visiting Northumberland Lady Indians. The Lady Trojans wasted little time, coming out and establishing what they wanted to do in the contest. Peyton Slater scored the first goal of the season eight minutes into the contest. Fast play and constant New Kent pressure on defense took advantage of Northumberland’s lethargic play. Rivals Charles City and New Kent collided on the gridiron Friday night with both teams trying to figure out who they were coming into the 2017 season. Needless to say, each team is moving in an opposite direction. Despite the storm-shortened contest, New Kent rushed for 200 yards in one half of play and prevented host Charles City from gaining a first down en route to a 28-6 victory. Christian earns extension at Mount St. Mary’s to remain head men’s basketball coach

After leading his college alma mater to two NCAA Tournaments in five years, New Kent native and Mount St. Mary’s head men’s basketball coach Jamion Christian has accepted a contract extension to remain at the school. Christian inked a long-term deal with the school, agreeing to a new deal that will see him coach into the 2026-27 season. His first extension was scheduled to end in 2018-19.
