Showing no ill effects from a long holiday layoff, New Kent’s Trojans wasted little time in asserting dominance during their return to the basketball court. The hosts opened Wednesday’s contest with a 9-0 run and never looked back in rolling over Poquoson’s Islanders 79-50. “Thankfully,” New Kent coach Ronnie Cox said over his team’s avoidance of a post-holiday letdown. “The first day back from the break, we couldn’t move the ball out of a wet paper bag, but tonight we were unselfish, moved the ball well, played good defense—everything a coach wants to see.” The Islanders, meanwhile, had no answer…

Warhill’s Lions quickly stole away any chance that New Kent’s Lady Trojans could pull off a stunning basketball upset. Utilizing a trapping press, the visiting Lions converted 11 first quarter steals into 14 points on the way to blanking the hosts 20-0 in the opening period. Saturday night’s renewal of the basketball rivalry between New Kent’s Trojans and West Point’s Pointers proved to be the type of contest that, at the conclusion, would best be covered with a paper bag. By sinking 13 of 17 shots from the floor in the first quarter alone, Jamestown’s Eagles threatened to run away from New Kent’s host Trojans for an easy basketball win. The Trojans, however, regained composure, closing within striking distance before halftime. Allen earns second team All-Mountain East Conference honors
Karley Allen, a former New Kent standout and current women’s volleyball player at UVA-Wise, has been named to the All-Mountain East Conference second team. Allen became UVA-Wise’s all time kill leader this season with a total of 1,606, with 291 accumulated during her senior season. She ranked second on her team this year in digs with 322. Allen has been named to either the All-Mountain East Conference first or second year during all four years of her college tenure. She also posted a 4.0 grade-point average for the fall semester.
New Kent pulls ahead of Mountain View late to claim Trojan Duals
New Kent’s Trojan wrestlers overcame an early Mountain View Wildcat lead to move in front to stay by winning two of the final three weights classes on the way to capturing the overall team title in their own Trojan Duals. Saturday’s all-day event at New Kent featured teams from nine schools — New Kent, King William, Lee-Davis, Spotsylvania, Mountain View, Gloucester, Clover Hill, Jamestown, and Powhatan — divided into two pools. Anyone watching the first 10 minutes of Friday night’s Grafton Clippers-New Kent Trojans basketball clash probably sensed a blowout in the making. The visiting Clippers shot better than 70 percent from the floor in building an 18-point lead.
