Tabb’s balanced attack offsets New Kent’s big plays in 56-20 decision
A small contingent of New Kent faithful that followed the Trojan football team to Yorktown for tonight’s (Friday’s) confrontation with Tabb’s Tigers had little to cheer about early on. A blocked punt on New Kent’s game-opening possession turned into the first of four Tabb touchdowns that had the Tigers cruising 28-0 just moments into the second quarter. But the Trojans used a couple of big plays to get on the scoreboard before halftime and prevent the contest from becoming entirely one-sided. Penalties hurt Panthers as Drifters coast to 35-6 win
Keying on Colonial Beach’s star running back Lamar Lucas, Charles City’s Panthers swarmed to the sophomore every time he touched the ball, shutting him down for a majority of the night. But it was a slew of penalties and a stagnant offense that doomed the host Panthers. New Kent’s Lady Trojans struggled to hold off York to win the first two sets before putting away the visiting Falcons in the third on the way to earning a straight set 25-22, 25-21, 25-9 triumph in tonight’s (Thursday’s) volleyball clash. An Oct. 2 Thursday night matchup between host New Kent and the visiting Poquoson Lady Islanders was supposed to be a contest of two up and coming field hockey programs. Instead, it was the visitors who put the contest away early. Problems handling serves on the part of New Kent’s host Lady Trojans loomed as a fatal flaw in Tuesday’s volleyball match with Warhill’s Lions. New Kent’s golf team, led by Parker Wallace’s 78, carded a foursome score of 327 to capture today’s (Monday) Conference 25 tournament championship played at the par 72 Royal New Kent golf course. The Trojans finished seven strokes ahead of runner-up Southampton’s 334. Both teams now advance to the Oct. 6 3A East Region Tournament.
