Lady Trojans blank Colonial Heights 6-0 in field hockey

New Kent’s Lady Trojans blanked the host Lady Colonials 6-0 in an Aug. 29 contest at Colonial Heights. Caitlin McCaughan’s hat trick powered the scoring for the visiting Lady Trojans. Taylor Holmes added a pair of goals for the victors, and Brittany LaPrade also found the back of the net. New Kent (2-0) opens up at home on Sept. 2 as they face the Southampton Lady Indians.

Quick scores lead to Raiders’ romp over Panthers

After a one-year hiatus, Charles City Panthers’ head coach Steward Greene returned to the helm to turnaround last season’s 1-9 campaign. Admittedly, Greene wished he could have hit the reset button after the first three minutes of the game. Amelia County’s Richard Perry scored two touchdowns early in the first quarter as the visiting Raiders topped the hosts Panthers 35-0 in the Aug. 29 season opener for both teams. New Kent field hockey opens 2014-15 season with win

Caitlin McCaughan and Olivia Mehalko scored two goals apiece and Brittany LaPrade added a score in the New Kent Lady Trojans’ field hockey season opening win Wednesday at Northumberland. The team won 5-1 on the offensive outburst. The team is scheduled to face the Indians again on Sept. 2 in their home opening contest.

Howell completes 100-mile horse ride

Mary Howell, a New Kent resident, completed a 100-mile endurance horse ride with her rescue horse Gryphon in a trail ride in Auburn, Ca. Howell was among 190 riders who began the 24-hour journey at Lake Tahoe. After navigating through rocky and treacherous trail, she and Gryphon were among 109 riders to successful complete the annual event. Howell has amassed more than 7,000 miles over the past 16 years as part of the American Endurance Riding Council (AERC) sanctions and competitions held nationwide. New Kent 11U baseball wins state title

New Kent’s 11U baseball won the Cal Ripkin state tournament held July 3-7 in Crimora. The team opened off tournament play on Independence Day, topping Northeast Augusta County before falling to Glen Allen later on in the day. On July 5, the team strung together wins in a double-header, defeating Arlington in the first contest and West Augusta County in the second matchup. Only July 6, New Kent defeated Rockville to set-up a rematch against Glen Allen in the double-elimination tournament. New Kent topped Glen Allen to force a final contest between the teams on July 7. Charles City, New Kent High School announce 2014-15 football schedules

Charles City and New Kent High School have announced football schedules for the 2014-15 season. New Kent will open Sept. 5 as they travel to King William. On Sept. 12, the Trojans commence Bay Rivers District competition by traveling to York. New Kent will host the Jamestown Eagles on Sept. 19 to open up the home schedule. Four of the first five games for the Trojans will be on the road. Charles City opens the season on Aug. 29 at home against Amelia County. Virginia Venom 12U earn top 20 finish in national tournament

Virginia Venom 12U, a baseball team consisting of players from New Kent and Charles City, earned a top 20 finish among 104 teams during the Dreamspark National Tournament held June 21-27 at Cooperstown, New York. The team earned a berth for the tournament after a 3-3 finish in a regional tournament in Georgia. The Virginia Venom competed in 10 games over five days at the national tournament. After dropping their first two contests, the Venom bounced back with a 4-1 victory over the Detroit Metrostars, led by pitcher Junior Ward’s eight strikeouts. New Kent gymnastics ends 4th season with state titles

After rigorous regiments and multiple competitions over the last four years, New Kent Gymnastics staked claim to another state title. LeeAnn Testerman brought home a championship in the floor exercise for Level 4 state meet. She also placed third on vault and fourth all-around. Alex Crostic finished second on the balance beam, third on floor, and third all-around. Mackenzie Harper finished sixth in the floor exercise, while Afton Fults finished sixth at the Level 3 state meet. The group also competed in the Xcel State championship meet, adding more titles.
