Last season, New Kent’s Trojans failed to win a soccer game. Only a lone tie prevented the record from reflecting a complete goose egg. But what a difference a year makes. After a disappointing winless soccer campaign a year ago, New Kent’s Trojans are on a roll. Last Friday night, the Trojans upped their unbeaten streak to four with a 5-2 conquest of Essex’s visiting Trojans. “I’ll take it,” said Trojan coach Clinton Leckie. “It’s a lot better than last year.” The contest, however, did not get off to a great start. Wind and extreme cold failed to alter pitching performances by New Kent’s Matt Metheny and Warhill’s Mike Brumfield. Metheny limited Warhill to three hits while Brumfield pitched a four-hitter. Despite a brisk breeze and wind chills below freezing, Marisa Bush fired a no-hitter and New Kent’s offense backed their pitcher with runs in every inning as the Lady Trojans remained unbeaten with a 10-0 shutout of Warhill’s visiting Lions. Goodlet leads New Kent at inaugural NK Invitational
New Kent’s Adrienne Goodlet won two events and placed in three others to lift the Lady Trojans to a second place finish in the first annual New Kent “Shoot the Gun and Run” Invitational track meet on March 16. Goodlet took top honors in the 100 meter dash (13.0) and 400 meter dash (60.29) to help the hosts score 109 points, only finishing behind Bay Rivers District foe Lafayette (127.5). New Kent’s girls and boys track teams each won by more than 50 points as both took first in the opening track meet of the 2013 season against Tidewater area schools at New Kent on March 13. New Kent’s girls scored 166 points to defeat King William (114) followed by Mathews (71), Middlesex (43), Washington and Lee (24), and Charles City (18). Charles City’s Avery Jones, Daron Jones, Cruz Adkins, and Jaelen Williams all contributed as double event winners as Charles City’s boys track and field team won its home opener on March 20. The Panthers scored 98 points, cruising to an easy victory over second place Sussex Central (69). Washington & Lee (65), Hopewell (37), and Armstrong (2) wound up the scoring on the boys side. Amelia pitcher hurls perfect game in Charles City opener
Charles City Panthers opened their baseball season on March 11 looking for a terrific start against the visiting Amelia County Raiders. They now wish they could have a redo on that season opener. Amelia pitcher Dillon Weaver went five scoreless innings, fanning all 15 batters he faced as he pitched a perfect game in handing the host Panthers a 21-0 drubbing in the non-district contest.
