Holiday tournaments haven’t been kind to New Kent High School’s boys’ basketball team in the past few years. Monday night’s matchup against the Caroline Cavaliers in the Goochland Holiday Tournament produced the same result as the previous year’s matchup: A Caroline win. New Kent’s Lady Trojans faced a tall task in the Dec. 15 contest against the invading Grafton Clippers. That battle was made tougher as Lady Trojan leading scorer Katelyn Norman was unavailable for the contest. The combination of the two made for a setback for New Kent. A Dec. 14 contest between the homestanding New Kent Trojans and the visiting Lafayette Rams pitted the teams in a battle that shapes the Bay Rivers District. But for the homestanding Trojans, the inability to grab rebounds and make timely shots combined with few attempts at the free throw line were deciding factors in their 58-54 loss to the Rams. Stellar second half propels Panthers by King & Queen

Charles City’s Panthers did something they haven’t done in a long time during a Dec. 13 boys’ basketball contest against the King & Queen Tigers; put together a strong second half. The hosts outscored King & Queen 22-9 in the third quarter as they pulled away to a 65-56 victory in the Tidewater District battle. Colonial Downs racing returns to weekends in 2023

Horse racing will return to the weekends at Colonial Downs in 2023. The Virginia Racing Commission approved a 27-date schedule for races at the venue located in New Kent. The season will be the first for Colonial Downs since the group’s transition of ownership to Churchill Downs Incorporated. Races will begin July 13, 2023, and run through Sept. 9, 2023, with live racing on Thursdays, Fridays, and Saturdays. Post time will be at 1:30 p.m. The Virginia Derby, with a purse of $300,000, is expected to close out the season on Sept. 9, 2023.

“I am not going to lie; this one really hurts.” Those were the words from New Kent High School boys’ basketball coach Garett Ross after his team was physically dominated by the York Falcons 61-43 during the Dec. 7 Bay Rivers District matchup. New Kent found it difficult to score inside early on, as the visiting Falcons’ physicality kept the hosts out the paint. After opening the season with two victories, New Kent’s Lady Trojans welcomed Bay Rivers District rival Tabb’s Lady Tigers on Tuesday night. Unfortunately for the hosts, Tabb stomped out the pleasantries early on in the contest. Fourteen unanswered points from the onset along with another surge in the third quarter was enough for Tabb to escape from New Kent with a 41-37 victory.
