Trojans earn first place finishes at New Kent Polar Bear meet
New Kent’s Girls’ and Boys’ Indoor Track & Field team posted first place finishes at the New Kent Polar Bear Meet held Saturday afternoon. Only running events took place at the meet. On the girls’ side, New Kent’s Lady Trojans accumulated 58 points to earn the win. Mathews finished in second with six points, while Charles City placed third with three points. Leading the way for the Lady Trojans was Sierrah Matthews, who posted wins in the girls’ 55-meter dash (8.08), 300-meter dash (50.97), and the 500-meter dash (1:30.22), and Rosemarie Gilbride who earned victories in the 1000-meter run (4:12.59)…

New Kent High School’s Wrestling Trojans continued their undefeated season by defeating Tabb High School and Bruton High School in their home opener on Jan. 13. The Trojans was able to down their Bay Rivers District foes by winning 12 of 14 matches against Tabb and swept all 14 matches against Bruton. York’s Lady Falcons had not defeated the hosting New Kent Lady Trojans since a Dec. 1, 2015 contest. However, when the visiting Lady Falcons took flight, they did it by using the three-point line. New Kent High School’s wrestling team went 3-0 in a Jan. 8 quad meet at Dinwiddie High School. New Kent earned wins over Cosby (65-12), Spotsylvania (57-12), and host Dinwiddie (70-12). The Trojans got undefeated 3-0 performances from nine of its wrestlers. Daniel Colgin (113), Kyle Gibson (120), Matthew Eberly (126), Evan Holloway (138), Patrick Jordon (145), Travis Ragland (152), Nick Vafiadis (160), Brayden Hohman (170), Dom Baker (182), and Nathaniel Fly (195) all went unblemished at the competition.

Curry siblings earn wins at Virginia Beach Invitational
New Kent siblings Lauren and Jayden Curry combined to win three medals at the Virginia Beach AAU Indoor Track and Field Invitational on Dec. 29. Lauren placed first in the girls’ shot put competition for ages 11-12. Jayden earned a first place finish in the boys 1500-meter run and in third in the 800-meter run in the 13-14 year old age bracket.

Charles City’s Panthers were one of the very few teams who handed a defeat to the Group 1A Co-State defending champions Mathews’ Blue Devils.
