Supervisors blasted on reassessment, taxes
Outrageous, shocking, a boondoggle, and a bunch of junk accounted for some of the descriptive phrases angry New Kent residents applied to the county’s recent real estate reassessment that hiked land values in the county an average of 40 percent. And the more than two dozen residents who spoke during last Wednesday’s public hearings before the Board of Supervisors on the county’s proposed 2008-09 budget had lots more to say, not only on property values but also the teacher salary situation in county schools. Everyone will agree that New Kent County is growing by leaps and bounds. There has been an increase of 1,484 registered voters in New Kent since the last presidential election almost four years ago. Registrar Gwen Ellyson predicts that another 500 names will be added to the books before registration for the Nov. 4 election closes on Oct. 6 at 5 p.m. Recently, much publicity has centered on long lines and lengthy wait times at polling places in Virginia during the February Presidential Primaries. CC cadets mentor 3rd graders
Charles City High School Army JROTC “Panther” cadets began their annual service-learning project with help from the third grade class at Charles City Elementary. Senior and junior class cadets adopted a mentorship program known as “Student Organization for Developing Attitudes” (SODA). JROTC teamed with Quin Rivers Agency for Community Action for the program. Cheryl Mora from Quin Rivers worked with cadets to develop and enhance the SODA project. Bimonthly, SODA teams visit third grade classes to discuss handling peer pressure, communicating well with others, making good decisions, accepting responsibility, and following directions. After tossing a perfect game the day before against Jamestown, Becca Mills fired a one-hitter at Bruton’s visiting Panthers as New Kent’s Lady Trojans solidified their hold on the top spot in the Bay Rivers District softball standings with a 1-0 triumph. Last Wednesday’s victory marked New Kent’s 11th in a row after a 5-3 start and became the ninth shutout during the ongoing run. NK soccer team finishes 5-2-3
New Kent’s age 12-15 recreational soccer team recently finished its third season with a 5-2-3 record. The New Kent team consists of players age 12 and 13 and competes against five teams with older players, some already playing at the high school level. New Kent coach L.B. Davis attributed his team’s success to what he termed “great teamwork, tremendous effort, and remarkable desire” to achieve. “I am so very proud of our team this season,” he said in a press release. “Each week we competed against players that were older and bigger than our players, but our team refused to…

Errors combined with little luck against Sussex pitching did not bode well for Charles City’s host Panthers. The visiting Tigers only got two hits over the first two innings, but managed to take a 4-0 lead with the help of four Panther errors. Sussex cruised from there to a 12-0 Tri-Rivers District baseball win in five innings on May 7. Bank of Essex team captures NK 4-H golf title
The Bank of Essex team of Mark Ware, Paul Erdman, Jason Turner, and Larry Burch won the 19th annual New Kent 4-H Golf Classic played April 18 at Brookwoods Golf Club in Quinton. The event, organized by New Kent Cooperative Extension, raised $2,900 for the New Kent 4-H Scholastic Fund. The winning foursome carded a 16 under par 56. Grant funds NK golf program
New Kent Parks and Recreation has received a matching grant from the U.S. Golf Association to help fund participation in the National Hook a Kid on Golf Program. The program for kids age 8-15 who have little or no golf experience is scheduled for Aug. 11-15, 5-7:30 p.m. each day at Brickshire Golf Club. Support is also being received from the Virginia State Golf Association and local golf pro Phil Woodrum. Volunteer instructors teach kids golf skills, etiquette, and history. Charles City teams finish fourth in Tri-Rivers track
Reynard Black and Chiquita Black posted double individual victories to spark Charles City’s track teams to fourth place finishes in the Tri-River District meet held May 13 at Charles City. Reynard Black won the high jump (5-10) and long jump (20-5 ¾) to earn the meet’s MVP trophy on the boys’ side. His 20 points helped the Panthers amass 55 points. Windsor edged Sussex 147-143 for the boys’ team title while Surry finished third with 66. Chesterfield Community and Franklin trailed Charles City with 24 and 22 points, respectively. Jake Williams’ three-run homer in the second inning overcame a 2-0 Bruton Panther lead. Then pitching plus defense did the rest as New Kent’s host Trojans held on for 5-4 Bay Rivers District baseball win.
