Charles City players earn A-D honors

Charles City’s Trevor Jones has been named to the first team on the All-Tri-Rivers District basketball squad. Panther teammate Michael Jefferson received honorable mention. Lady Panther Shana Braxton was named to the All-Tri-Rivers girls’ basketball second team while Shana Brown and Toni Harris received honorable mention.  

NK takes tennis home opener

New Kent’s boys’ tennis team opened its home schedule on a successful note by downing non-district opponent Rappahannock 8-1 on March 19. In singles, New Kent’s Carter Gilland (8-3), Taylor Gresch (8-2), Miles Foley (8-0), Jacob Bivans (8-2), and Kyle Mechling (8-4) posted wins. Chris Sickal absorbed an 8-4 loss. New Kent swept doubles with Gilland and Sickal winning 8-3, Gresch and Tyler Block cruising 8-1, and Foley and Bivans prevailing 8-6. The team is 2-0 heading into Bay Rivers District competition.  

Poquoson edges New Kent in BRD baseball, softball

Poquoson’s Islanders may be the odds-on favorite to win the Bay Rivers District baseball crown, but New Kent’s Trojans served notice that they could put a dent in the Islanders’ plans. The host Trojans erased all but one of a three-run deficit in the late innings of their March 21 encounter, but could not draw closer as Poquoson escaped with a 5-4 win. NK, CC open track campaigns

New Kent’s boys’ track team amassed 194 points to easily cruise past four Group A opponents as outdoor track season got underway on March 18 on the New Kent oval. The Lady Trojans, meanwhile, squeezed past the same four foes. On the boys’ side, Mathews scored 57 points to finish second overall while Charles City (29) placed third. Trailing were King William (21) and Middlesex (9). The Lady Trojans scored 84 points to 74 for runner-up King William. Middlesex ended with 63 followed by Charles City’s 45 and Mathews’ 36. Lady Trojans post season opening shutout, Trojans romp 11-1 over Lafayette in five

A three-run first inning proved to be all New Kent’s Lady Trojans needed to put away Lafayette’s invading Rams. The hosts then rode the four-hit pitching of Ashley McMichael the rest of the way for a 3-0 victory in their March 20 Bay Rivers District softball season opener. McMichael helped her own cause at the plate, tripling into the right-center field gap to drive in DeDe Samuels, who had reached on an error, and Maria Bates (single) with one away in the bottom of the first inning. CC receives septic pumpout grant

Charles City County has received grant money from the Virginia Department of Conservation and Recreation to pay for septic tank pump outs for 20 low to moderate homeowners who qualify. Grant money can be applied only to households whose septic systems do not have problems. Virginia law requires septic system pump-out every five years. Homeowners must supply information on household income, home address and ownership, who lives in the house, and the last time the septic system was pumped. NK grand jury indicts seven

Seven individuals have been indicted for various felony offenses by a New Kent Circuit Court grand jury. Convening on March 16, the grand jury indicted: –Anthony Rashad Allen, 21, of 989 Tuggle Road in Farmville, on one count of marijuana possession with intent to distribute. The alleged offense occurred last Nov. 11. –Courtland Oniel Barrett, 36, of 1414 County St. in Portsmouth, on one count each of possession of a narcotic with intent to distribute, eluding police, and misdemeanor driving under the influence. Barrett was arrested following a police chase on Interstate 64 last Nov. 8. –Ernest Lenwood Cotman Jr.,…

Defendant attributes long criminal record to heroin

A man whose vanity license plate tag affixed to his getaway car led to his capture after robbing a New Kent convenience store must serve five years, 10 months in prison. Kevin Bernard Page, 31, of 17474 King William Avenue in King William County, told Judge Thomas B. Hoover he was ill due to his heroin addiction when he drove to the Bottoms Bridge Shell convenience store on Route 60 last Sept. 19, walked inside, and grabbed $836 from the store’s register when the lone clerk on duty opened the cash drawer. Grant enabling NK to hire six more fire/EMS workers

New Kent Fire/Rescue plans to more than double its number of fulltime, paid workers, thanks to a federal homeland security grant. County officials learned last week that New Kent has won a SAFER (Staffing for Adequate Fire and Emergency Response) grant administered by the Department of Homeland Security. The $758,856 in federal dollars along with a county match of $977,047, all spread over the next five years, will pay for six fulltime fire/emergency medical workers. CC cocaine cases land jail time

A Charles City woman, jailed after testing positive for cocaine when she first showed up for trial in county circuit court, has been sentenced to 10 years in prison with all but three months suspended for a cocaine possession charge stemming from the Operation Happy Holidays drug sweep. Sylvia D. Johnson, 40, of 9431 Little Elam Road, had been scheduled to stand trial on March 3 for one count of crack cocaine distribution. Proceedings, however, were postponed after a urine screening revealed cocaine. The drug remains detectable in the human body for up to five days after use. Judge Thomas…
