A key change to start a new business in New Kent County became effective Jan. 1, 2020. New businesses based in New Kent must register their fictitious business or trade name with the Virginia State Corporation Commission (SCC). New Kent County’s Clerk of the Circuit Court will no longer accept new certificates of assumed or fictitious names. The new requirement is the result of an amendment adopted by the Virginia Assembly (Code of Virginia, Chapter 59.1-69). Charles City Public Schools has been selected as one of the initial localities to implement the use of electric school buses. Dominion Energy will place 50 electric buses in 16 different localities as part of its phase one operations. The buses will be constructed by Thomas Built Buses and expected to be on area roads by the end of 2020. Throughout the last month, the rise of “second amendment sanctuaries” has grown due to the declaration by county leadership. The declaration means that local counties will support people’s rights to bear arms as written in the United States Constitution and will oppose any legislation that may be passed at the state level to prohibit it.
