Karaffa graduates college, commissioned into U.S. Marine Corps

Kevin Karaffa, a 2014 graduate of New Kent High School, graduated from Radford University on Dec. 16, 2017. He earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Exercise, Sport and Health Education. On Mar. 17, Karaffa became commissioned as a second lieutenant in the United States Marine Corps by successfully completing officer candidate school in Quantico.

Hula recognized at ‘Grow Beyond’

Johnny Hula of Charles City was honored at “Grow Beyond” in Anaheim, California as he received his National Corn Growers Association (NGCA) award for outstanding yield performance with Progency 5115 VT2P. Hula achieved 504.6890 bu/a yield at his Charles City farm to finish third in this year’s competition.

Virginia senators named honorary co-chairs for ‘Green vs. New Kent’ 50th anniversary

Senator Tim Kaine and Senator Mark Warner will serve as Honorary Co-Chairs of the 50th anniversary of the Green vs. New Kent” Supreme Court case. The Green decision established the duties of the school boards to affirmatively eliminate all vestiges of state-imposed segregation. It also placed an affirmative duty on school boards to integrate schools and is recognized as the most significant public school desegregation decision of the Supreme Court following Brown vs. Board of Education. Brawley selected for leadership conference

Cameron Brawley, a JROTC Cadet Captain and sophomore at Charles City High School, has been selected to attend the Youth Leadership Conference on Apr. 19-22 in Jamestown. With financial support from the Richmond Chapter of the Military Order of Word Wars, Cameron will attend the conference that focuses on leadership, patriotism, and the free enterprise system. Students will receive guidance from business professionals, guided tours of historical sites, leadership challenges, as well as classroom interaction.
