David Bushhouse, New Kent High School’s Class of 2015 Salutatorian, was inducted into the Omicron Delta Kappa, national leadership honor society for college men and women, during an Oct. 29 ceremony at Hampden-Sydney College. Members are selected based on their influence as campus leaders to better campus life and to encourage high standards in all activities. Bushhouse is a member of Chi Beta Phi (science), Chi Alpha campus ministry, and Union-Philanthropic Literacy Society. David is the son of Steven and Jennifer Bushhouse of Quinton.
Heritage Public Library received a donation of a historical book collection from the Board of Directors of the Virginia Tech Corps of Cadets Alumni Association Inc. (VTCCA). Colonel Jess Fowler, who retired from the U.S. Army and lives in New Kent, presented Heritage Public Library Director Chandra McPherson during a Dec. 5 presentation at the New Kent branch. Fowler, who is a member of the VTCCA board, presented a complete six volume set of “The Bugle’s Echo” by Col. Harry D. Temple. The volume describes military life at Virginia Tech from 1872-1934. Three New Kent High School students took third place in a recent math competition at Rappahannock Community College. Nakoma Austin, Noah Babin, and Brandon Bonner competed in the Calculus division. The trio outlasted other localities to earn bronze.
Richmond Area Bicycle Association (RABA) delivered 34 bicycles and helmets to kids in Charles City on Dec. 2. RABA contributed and donated the bicycles to Charles City’s Christmas Mother program. In total, more than 450 bicycles were donated to local Christmas Mother programs, including the Charles City and New Kent programs. The bicycles will be given to children and needy families based on recommendations and applications received from families in need of assistance during the holiday season.

Nearly three years ago, Charles City County received a $600,000 grant as part of a broadband initiative to bring high-speed Internet to the locality. Three years later, citizens are still asking, “Where is it?” Technically, the Internet service is available, but only to those in Roxbury Industrial Park. The service is currently running through fiber-optics underground, which is receiving high praise from business owners.
