With the booming population comes a need for additional services in New Kent County. County Administrator Rodney Hathaway looked to address that issue in his proposed FY2020-21 budget Monday night. Hathaway presented a budget of $76,079,426 for the upcoming cycle. By contrast, the FY2019-20 budget totaled $69,851,662. Of the proposed amount for the new fiscal year, New Kent County schools are slated to receive $36,625,592, just under 50 percent of the total budget. Virginia State Police have confirmed a fatality after an accident Saturday afternoon in New Kent. Virginia State Police responded to a single vehicle crash just after 4 p.m. at the 5000 block of Roxbury Road (Route 106), just prior to the Charles City County line. According to the police report and preliminary investigation, the driver of a Ford pickup traveling southbound was exiting a curve when it ran off the right side of the road, striking a tree and catching fire. A Richmond man who allegedly killed a Charles City man last November was indicted by a Charles City grand jury Tuesday morning. Antwan Kareem Jackson, 37, of the 1800 block of Keswick Avenue, received indictments on count each of second-degree murder, use of a firearm in commission of a felony (second offense), and possession of a weapon by violent felon. A Dinwiddie man who took part in a $112,000 robbery in Charles City will spend the next 16 years in prison. Jeremy Brandon Martin, 34, of the 8200 block of Vaughan Road, learned his fate during Friday morning proceedings in Charles City Circuit Court. Charles City’s School Board members got its initial view of superintendent of schools David Gaston’s first proposed budget for FY2020-21 cycle. Gaston proposed a recommendation of $11,826,693 for the upcoming fiscal year, an increase of $1,704,197 from this year’s budget. Of that amount, approximately $7,294,345 is being asked from the county for operations, an increase of $1,609,452, or roughly 28 percent. A Lanexa man had two charges overturned by the Virginia Court of Appeals during an Oct. 1, 2019 hearing. W. Walker Ware IV had one charge of embezzlement and attempted extortion tossed by Judge William G. Petty. During a June 18, 2018 trial, a New Kent Circuit Court jury had rendered verdicts against Ware, claiming that the developer for a New Kent subdivision failed to repair roads in a subdivision. New Kent Sheriff’s Office is asking for information about a woman who has been missing since Saturday night. Joan Marie Orr, 69, of the 8900 block of Tunstall Road, was last seen at 7 p.m. on Feb. 15. She left in a gray 2013 Ford Escape with Virginia license plate WSG-1153. It is currently unknown her direction or destination. Orr does have certain medical conditions that require medication, and it is believed she is not currently in possession of those medications.
