New Kent Board of Supervisors have agreed to a tentative plan to implement the reduction of the machinery and tax rate. New Kent Commissioner of the Revenue Laura Ecimovic spoke to county leaders Wednesday morning about a new depreciation schedule and recommended rate reduction. She advised supervisors that the rate would assist in making the county competitive with surrounding localities. She added that the reduction would give current businesses a tax break. A former New Kent teacher and coach has been taken into custody by New Kent Sheriff’s Office Monday morning stemming from unsealed indictments. Matthew Spencer Duckworth, 40, of the 9000 block of Chestnut Drive, New Kent, was arrested on Nov. 26 on five counts of use of communications systems to facilitate certain offenses involving children. Those charges were certified by a New Kent grand jury on Nov. 19. A Henrico man was indicted on a single charge during Friday morning proceedings in Charles City Circuit Court. Adam Garth Clements, 37, of the 300 block of Newbridge Road, received a true bill on one count of grand larceny. Clements allegedly stole copper wire, an extension ladder, and other items on June 25. His trial is tentatively set for January 2019.
Tim Kaine retained his seat in the U.S. Senate, defeating challengers Corey Stewart and Matt Waters in Tuesday’s November General Election. In New Kent, Stewart received 6,762 votes (63.45 percent) while Kaine accumulated 3,722 votes (34.93 percent). Waters racked in 159 votes in the county. School board representatives approved a proposed $1.1 million Capital Improvement Plan (CIP) for the next school year at Monday evening’s regular school board meeting.
