New Kent posts shutout against Bruton to start season 2-0

By Robb Johnson | September 14, 2019 10:06 pm

A message continues to be sent by New Kent’s football team: A one-time trip to the playoffs isn’t enough. The Trojans continued to roll early on in the 2019 season, shutting out Bruton 42-0 in the Sept. 13 Bay Rivers District. New Kent wasted little time behind a punishing running game. Logan Powell scored on a five-yard dash less than two minutes into contest to put the hosts up 7-0. On the next series, quarterback Wade Grubbs connected with Adam Cable on a screen pass, resulting in a 21-yard reception and escort into the end zone for the next score….

By Robb Johnson | September 13, 2019 7:51 am

In a battle of two young teams, it was evident that errors and mistakes would factor into the outcome. For New Kent’s Lady Trojans, it turned out to be on the winning side. Capitalizing off mistakes by the visiting Lafayette Lady Rams, New Kent defeated their Bay Rivers District Rival 25-15, 18-25, 26-24, and 25-19 in the Sept. 12 clash. The first set started horrendously for the hosts, as they were not able to return many of Lafayette’s shots due to mistimed errors. The Lady Rams raced out 8-1 before New Kent’s turnaround began. As the season continues to press forward for the Charles City Lady Panthers’ volleyball team, opportunities to return to the win column continue to become available for the team. Unfortunately, those chances sometimes are tough to capitalize on. Such was the case during a Sept. 12 matchup against the visiting King & Queen Lady Tigers. Slow starts in the first and third sets factored in the downfall for the Lady Panthers as King & Queen swept the hosts 25-5, 25-13, 25-15 in the Tidewater District affair. Trojan Wall: New Kent defense stifles Colonial Heights in season opener

By Robb Johnson | September 10, 2019 12:17 pm

After reaching the playoffs for the first time since 2003 last year, the New Kent Trojans’ football team looked to build on that appearance in a Monday night contest with the visiting Colonial Heights’ Colonials. The home team didn’t disappoint the faithful crowd. New Kent defeated Colonial Heights in a 37-6 drubbing to start off the season undefeated. And most was thanks to the defense and transfer Noah Fountaine. During the opening drive for the Colonials, Fountaine sacked quarterback Tyler White in what would be the first of three takedowns on the night. When New Kent took possession of the…

Charles City scores, but Roanoke Catholic extends winning streak

By Robb Johnson | September 8, 2019 11:32 am

After a two-year hiatus from the turf, Charles City High School’s football team returned to its home confines to a fierce crowd and enthusiastic supporters. Unfortunately for the hosts, that wouldn’t be enough as they faced a Roanoke Catholic team that hadn’t tasted defeat since 2016. Such was the case Saturday evening as the visiting Celtics trounced Charles City 64-6 in the contest that escaped the Panthers early on. Despite early positive momentum for the Panthers, a three-and-out resulted in a punt to the Celtics. It didn’t take long for the visitors, operating out of a flexbone formation, to put…

While promise was shown in the first two sets by the hosts, Essex’s power forced Charles City to struggle in returning the ball over the net. A loss of confidence in the…
