Behind state qualifying times in hurdle events by Laina Brown and Skye Bradby, Charles City’s Lady Panthers earned a third-place finish at the Tidewater District Championships held at their home stadium on May 15. Brown’s time of 18.06 in the girls’ 100-meter hurdles not only clinched an automatic state berth, but also won the event for her. The frustration of a rough season for New Kent’s Lady Trojans soccer team was evident during the May 14 Senior Night affair against the visiting Warhill Lady Lions. And New Kent head coach Steve Grech let the referees know about it. New Kent High School’s C.J. Reeders won the triple jump at the prestigious Southern Track Classic on May 10. Reeders leaped 47’9” in the event, beating out several top-notch competitors on the east coast at the invite only competition event. He is the current defending state champion in triple jump among Group 3A schools.
Charles City’s Steven Williams Jr. ran a state qualifying time in the boys’ 100-meter dash as the hosting Panthers placed fourth at their May 9 home meet. Williams finished third in the event and accumulated a time of 11.41, earning the automatic berth to the state meet at East Rockingham High School on May 31-June 1.
