Harsh conditions and cool temperatures couldn’t deter New Kent’s Lady Trojans fiery scoring outburst as part of their home debut Monday night. Powered by a hat trick by Lady Trojan Taylor Clements, the hosts lit up the scoreboard, scoring eight goals and pitching a shutout against the visiting Lady Blue Devils of Varina in the soccer home opener. New Kent’s girls, boys settle for second at seventh annual Shoot the Gun and Run Invitational

Despite garnering wins in six events, New Kent’s Lady Trojans had to settle for second place at the seventh annual Shoot the Gun and Run Track Invitational on Saturday. The hosting Lady Trojans scored 146.5 points at the meet, finishing a mere 1.5 points behind Bay Rivers foe Tabb who won the meet with 148 points. Another district rival, York, finished third with 107 points. Neighboring Charles City High School garnered 10 points for a tenth-place finish. New Kent’s Lady Trojans’ softball team has been primarily known for their offence. But in order to in games for a championship run, they will need to play tough defense. With communication on the defensive side of the ball and powered by the pitching of Gracie Ellis, New Kent defeated the Colonial Heights Lady Colonials 6-0 in the Mar. 14 contest. Charles City’s Cameron Vaden won two events as the Panthers finished in third place at its Mar. 13 home opening meet. Vaden claimed victories in the boys’ high jump (5’0”) and the 200-meter dash (24.28) to help the Panthers earn 63 points to earn the bronze in the nine team meet.
