Charles City High School cancels fall sports season

In what seems to be a growing trend around the country, Charles City High School announced the cancellation of the fall sports season for 2018. In a press release issued by superintendent of schools David Gaston, Charles City will not be fielding a football nor volleyball team for the upcoming season. “Due to a lack of student participation, we will not be fielding teams for this season,” he said in a press release. “Over the coming week, our school board and personnel will be working with the community to assess underlying reasons why these two particular athletic teams are experiencing…

Christian named inaugural head coach of NBA G-League team in Washington D.C.

As a New Kent High School athlete in the mid-2000s, Jarell Christian took pride in being persistent whether it was diving on the floor for a loose basketball or making that last lean at the finish line to win a race. The former Trojan has transformed that persistence into a historical first for the National Basketball Association’s (NBA) G-League. Christian is the first head coach of the Capital City Go-Go based out of Washington D.C. Providence Forge siblings qualify for high jump event in national track meets

Siblings Jayden and Lauren Curry, both of Providence Forge, qualified for the USA Track and Field (USATF) and Amateur Athletic Union (AAU) National Junior Olympic Track and Field Championships. The siblings participate in the high jump competition in their respective age group. At the USATF regionals in Hampton, Jayden cleared a height of 4’5” to finished third in the boys’ 11-12 age group, while sister Lauren cleared 3’11” in the girls’ 9-10 age division to finish fourth. On the Fourth of July, most people are spending time with family and friends, enjoying cookouts and watching firework shows at night time. For Charles City native Thomas ‘Trae’ Kelly, he was spending Independence day appearing on ESPN2 from Coney Island in New York and competing in a televised cornhole tournament. Cornhole is a game where players take turns tossing small beanbags in an attempt to put them in a hole. Kelly is taking that recreational pastime and transforming it into a career. New Kent’s Reeders wins triple jump at Group 3A state track meet

New Kent’s C.J. Reeders leaped 45’3” in the boys’ triple jump en route to winning the event at the Group 3A State Championships from June 1-3 at Harrisonburg High School. Reeders’ win earned 10 points for the Trojans track team, helping the team finish ninth at the Group 3A State Championships with a total of 24.5 points. New Kent’s 4×100 relay team of Reeders, Joe Allen, Julius Jacobs, and Evan Branch ran a season-best of 44.08 to earn a third-place finish. Brown finishes 11th in girls’ 100-meter hurdles at 1A state meet

Charles City Lady Panther Laina Brown earned an 11th place finish in the girls’ 100-meter hurdles at the Group 1A State Track & Field Championships on June 2 at East Rockingham High School. Brown ran a time of 18.80, the second best of her career at the event. She was the first Lady Panther to compete in the state championships for Charles City since 2012.
