Fall sports a no-go at Charles City High School in 2021

Friday nights at Leon C. Miles Memorial Stadium at Charles City County High School will be empty for the second consecutive year. Charles City County High School announced the cancellation of Fall Athletics for the 2021 season. Curry places fourth at National Junior Olympics

A New Kent teenager earned a top-five finish at the National Junior Olympics track and field meet in Houston, Texas, on Aug. 4. Lauren Curry finished fourth in the 13U girls’ high jump competition with a clearance of 4’9”. By finishing in the top five, she earned All-American status in the event.

Curry siblings medal at Virginia Commonwealth Games

New Kent siblings Lauren and Jayden Curry both earned two medals at the Virginia Commonwealth Track & Field Games held on July 24 at Liberty University. Lauren earned the gold medal in the Girls 13-14U high jump competition and earned a bronze in the girls’ 400-meter dash. Brother Jayden won the Boys 15-16U 1500-meter run and garnered a silver in the high jump competition.

Horse racing returns to Colonial Downs on July 19

Thoroughbred horse racing will return to New Kent County at Colonial Downs beginning Monday, July 19. The Colonial Downs Group enters its third year of racing in the Commonwealth of Virginia. Races will take place Monday-Wednesday, with $500,000 daily purses over a seven-week span that ends on Sept. 1. Curry siblings qualify for National AAU Junior Olympics

New Kent siblings Lauren and Jayden Curry have qualitied for the National AAU Junior Olympics meet to be held in Texas in late July. Lauren claimed wins in the 13U shot put (31’6’) and triple jump (27’7”) at the regional competition held at Varina High School from July 25-27. She also placed second in the high jump competition (4’8”) and the pentathlon with a total of 1,906 points. Brother Jayden finished third in the 15-16U boys’ high jump with a clearance of 5’2”.

Rustburg edges New Kent 1-0 to capture Group 3A softball state championship

Separated by two-and-a-half hours and a two-month time span, New Kent’s Lady Trojans faced off against the Rustburg Lady Red Devils for the second time in a state championship competition. In April, the Lady Red Devils played host in the Group 3A volleyball state championship and kept their undefeated record intact with a sweep of New Kent.
