Charles City teenager to participate in national rodeo competition

Charly Slaughter, a teenager from Charles City, has been named to the Virginia’s High School Rodeo Association state team. Slaughter will participate in the National High School Finals Rodeo (NHSFR) on July 18-24 in Lincoln, Nebraska. She will be participating in pole bending, breakaway roping, team roping, and goat-tying.

New Kent shuts out Skyline to secure spot in state championship game

Two years ago, Skyline High School’s Lady Hawks ended New Kent’s Lady Trojans softball season in the quarterfinals of the Group 3A State Tournament. In a June 23 rematch of the two teams, the hosting Lady Trojans coming out as winners in impressive fashion. New Kent dominated Skyline 7-0 to advance to the state finals game on June 26. The Lady Trojans will have a unique situation as they will play host the championship game against the visiting Rustburg Lady Red Devils. Barber snags silver medal in boys’ long jump at Group 3A state championship meet

New Kent Class of 2021 valedictorian and track and field standout Isaac Barber finished second in the boys’ long jump competition at the Group 3A State Championships Friday afternoon at Liberty University. Barber garnered a mark of 21’4¾” to win the silver medal at the competition. He also won a medal in the boys’ triple jump, finishing in fifth place with a leap of 42’7¼.” Barber was joined by teammates Aaron Sweeney, Markus Sydnor, and Aaron Walker in the 4×100 relay, earning a medal by finishing seventh in the event with a time of 44.89. Williams finishes as runner-up in Group 1A state triple jump competition

Recent Charles City High School graduate Alexis Williams finished as the Group 1A state runner-up in the girls’ triple jump Friday afternoon at James Madison University. Williams leaped 35’0” to earn the silver medal in the event. She also earned an additional medal in the girls’ 100-meter dash, finishing in eighth place with a time of 13.89. On the boys’ side, Charles City graduate D’Angelo Smith earned a fifth-place medal in the boys’ 110-meter hurdles. Smith ran a time of 17.78 in what was his only event of the day. Lamprecht qualifies for U.S.A. Youth Elite triathlon national competition

Isaac Lamprecht, a freshman at New Kent High School, recently qualified for the U.S.A. Youth Elite Triathlon National Tournament. Lamprecht competed at the Pleasant Prairie Cup Triathlon in the Youth Elite Male age 13-15 category. He finished 20th out of 68 athletes, completing a 350-yard lake swim, a 10-kilometer bike ride, and a 1.55 mile run in 33:30. Lamprecht will compete in the national tournament in West Chester, Ohio, this upcoming August.

Curry siblings qualify for regional Junior Olympics competition

New Kent siblings Lauren and Jayden Curry earned success at the Virginia District AAU Junior Olympics Qualifying Track and Field meet this past weekend in Henrico. Lauren Curry won the 13U girls’ triple jump and high jump competition with marks of 28’10” and 4’8”, respectively. She also placed second in the shot put with a toss of 29’4”. Brother Jayden Curry placed third in the 15-16U boys’ high jump competition with a clearance of 5’2”.

New Kent dominates opening round in softball win over Hopewell

In a rare Sunday afternoon game, New Kent’s Lady Trojans had little resistance from the visiting Hopewell Lady Blue Devils in the opening round of the Group 3A Region A tournament. Behind the pitching of recent graduate Gracie Ellis, the top-seeded Lady Trojans cruised to a 21-1 victory in a contest that was never competitive.
