Warhill rocks New Kent 5-1 in girls’ soccer home opener

After a season opening road victory at Bruton, New Kent’s Lady Trojans soccer team looked to carry that momentum into Monday night’s contest against the visiting Warhill Lady Lions. Unfortunately for the hosts, the match will become a teaching tool for improvement. Utilizing heavy ball pressure in the second half, Warhill eased its way to a 5-1 victory in the Bay Rivers District contest. In the first half, New Kent kept Warhill in check, as defensive efforts by Ellie Hobson and stops by goalkeeper Hannah Milby assisted in keeping the game tied in the first half. Bruton welcomes youthful New Kent soccer team with 6-1 thumping

The last time New Kent’s boys’ soccer team took the pitch, they were in a playoff contest against Bay Rivers District rival Tabb in 2019. Now, two years removed, the Trojans are learning that while they have promise and potential, practice and setbacks will be their best friend going forward. Early scores by the visiting Bruton Panthers coupled with New Kent’s scoreless second half resulted in the Trojans falling 6-1 in Friday night’s season opening contest. Charles City opens outdoor track and field season with fourth place finish at Northumberland

Charles City High School’s boys’ track and field team accumulated 23 points to finish fourth in an April 29 quad meet at Northumberland. Charles City’s D’Angelo Smith emerged as the team’s top performer. Smith earned a trio of second place finishes in the triple jump (40’11”), 110-meter hurdles (17.53), and 300 meter hurdles (49.65). He also placed third in the long jump competition (18’6½”). Other scorers for the Panthers were Justin Post-Parada placing third in the 400-meter dash (1:03.17), and the discus (74’2”), and fourth in the 800-meter run (2:58.36), and Dakotah Brinkley earning a fifth-place finish in the 800-meter…

Baker named Group 3A Region A player of the year, five named to first team; Burnett tabbed Coach of the Year

New Kent High School Lady Trojan volleyball setter Haley Baker has been named the Group 3A Region A Player of the Year. Baker highlighted five Lady Trojans who received first-team accolades on the all-region team. Joining Baker are middle blocker Julia Hathaway, outside hitter Aubrey Hyndshaw, middle blocker Jaiden McCoy, and libero Andrea Sorensen. Three New Kent players were also named to the region’s second-team. For most of the season, New Kent’s Lady Trojans volleyball team have either overwhelmed opponents or lost very close, competitive matches against them. With a state title on the line Friday night and the rare occasion where a team has the opportunity to host a state championship, the visiting Lady Trojans hoped a trip to the visiting Rustburg Lady Red Devils would result in another trophy being hoisted above their heads.
