Life is not guaranteed and we are all on borrowed time. I had to understand that when going through the daily grind. It is okay to step back at times and admire the…

As a Charles City resident, I built my home in 2016 after moving from New Kent County. After moving, the first thing we encountered was no reliable internet and no cable service. Cell phone towers seem to be few as I can only get one or two bars and had many dropped calls. In New Kent, we had good service of all three. Since I didn’t have any school children and retired, I made do by getting everything from two satellites that cost $185 a month. I am resigned to the fact that if I want groceries, drug store prescriptions,…

It’s the first week of Black History Month and it is time for a chance to get real. People always ask why this month is so important. This month has extra meaning for so many because for so long, the history added with the accomplishments of so many have felt like they have been pushed off to the side. Black excellence is important whether people want to acknowledge it or not. The United States of America was built on the backs of slaves, along with African-American people who never get their true credit for what they have accomplished. This month…

I believe that New Kent High School is not tracking attendance when you enroll your child to be at the school café to do virtual learning. Kids can shut their cameras off, and anyone can log onto the Chromebook. As long as a child logs on, the school counts attendance. Even though your child can be enrolled, if your child does not show up and still logs onto the Chromebook, the school has no knowledge that the child is missing. As a parent, this is alarming. I enrolled my child who was failing with virtual learning to attend the school…
