Opening day for Charles City’s Panthers’ baseball team had a little bit of a different feel as they played at the well-known Harrison Park, a venue that hosted many contests in the 1980s and early 1990s. The Mar. 14 contest against Peninsula Catholic looked to give the young Panthers some experience. Will Tolley’s clearance of 11’6” in the pole vault earned him a fourth-place finish. New Kent’s Lady Trojans exceeded expectations this year by advancing to the second round of the Group 3A Region A quarterfinal found. The Lady Trojans accumulated 108 points, good enough to finish ninth in the contest. Bay Rivers District rival York claimed the team title with 352 points. New Kent High School’s wrestling team earned a fifth-place finish in the Group 3A State Championship in a two-day meet held Feb. 16-17. The Trojans scored 102.5 points in the affair, with powerhouse Christianburg easily claimng the title once again with 258 points.
