New Kent’s Lady Trojans entered their Mar. 14 home opening looking to topple a Colonial Heights team that swept them last season. Employing a strategy to hold the ball and keep it on their side of the field proved to be a winning formula for the home team. Second half goals by New Kent’s Grace Lysek and Haley Brady provided breathing room as the hosts prevailed 3-1 in the home opener for the Lady Trojans. Charles City drops opener to Peninsula Catholic in clash at Harrison Park

Opening day for Charles City’s Panthers’ baseball team had a little bit of a different feel as they played at the well-known Harrison Park, a venue that hosted many contests in the 1980s and early 1990s. The Mar. 14 contest against Peninsula Catholic looked to give the young Panthers some experience. However, errors and the inability to communicate on the field destroyed a promising early start as the hosts fell 20-8 in the season opening contest. New Kent boys finish tenth at Group 3A indoor state track meet

New Kent’s boys’ indoor track team accumulated 23 points, finishing 10th at the Group 3A Indoor State Track & Field championship meet on Feb. 23-24. Will Tolley’s clearance of 11’6” in the pole vault earned him a fourth-place finish. Evan Branch placed sixth in the 55-meter dash with a time of 6.67, Mozay Kalo finished sixth in the 500-meter dash with a time of 1:08.76, while Michael Gatling tossed 42’½” in the shot and placed eighth in the 55-meter hurdles by running 8.31. New Kent’s Lady Trojans exceeded expectations this year by advancing to the second round of the Group 3A Region A quarterfinal found. Unfortunately for the Lady Trojans, a trip to Hopewell to face a 19-1 Lady Blue Devil squad ended their season. A plethora of turnovers coupled with the inability to get the offense going resulted in New Kent’s downfall, dropping the contest at Hopewell 74-26 Monday night. Lady Trojans’ swim and dive team earn top ten finish at state championships

New Kent High School girls’ swim and diving team earned a top ten finish at the Group 3A State Championships on Feb. 16. The Lady Trojans accumulated 108 points, good enough to finish ninth in the contest. Bay Rivers District rival York claimed the team title with 352 points. Alexis Mills earned a second-place finish in the girls’ one-meter dive competition with a score of 457.85. New Kent finishes fifth at Group 3A State wrestling championships

New Kent High School’s wrestling team earned a fifth-place finish in the Group 3A State Championship in a two-day meet held Feb. 16-17. The Trojans scored 102.5 points in the affair, with powerhouse Christianburg easily claimng the title once again with 258 points. Also finishing ahead of New Kent was Warren County (137), Cave Spring (135.5), and Staunton River (111). Trent Ragland claimed the 220-pound division in the state championships.
