Two New Kent High School Lady Trojans have been named to the Group 3A All-State second team in girls’ volleyball. New Kent Senior Clara Foster and New Kent Junior Aubrey Hyndshaw were recognized by the Virginia High School League as selections in a Monday afternoon press release.
New Kent’s Julia Hathaway emerged as a double-event winner at the Christopher Newport University Winter Frolic Indoor Track & Field meet held Dec. 10-11 in Newport News. Hathaway claimed titles in the girls’ triple jump with a leap of 34’6½ and captured the girls’ 300-meter dash with a time of 42.56. She also finished as a runner-up in the girls’ long jump (15’8”) and the 55-meter dash (7.47). New Kent High School’s Trojan Wrestling squad swept five opponents on their way to winning their annual Trojan Duals Saturday afternoon. New Kent defeated Atlee (62-18), Hanover (71-6), Varina (72-12) and Orange (66-16) to set up a finals matchup against Landstown. The Trojans continued their success by defeating Landstown 48-33. The rivalry between Charles City’s Panthers and New Kent’s Trojans have been evenly matched over the last few years, with teams splitting the last four games against each other. February 2020 was the last time a majority of the Charles City County High School community had an opportunity to see live sports. Since then, several changes have taken place to bring back the life of the high school sports atmosphere that include a refurbished gymnasium for the Panthers. New Kent High School’s Lady Trojans cross-country team earned an 11th place finish at the Group 3A State Championships Saturday afternoon at Green Hill Park in Salem. Freshman Madison Johnson was the top performer for the Lady Trojans, finishing in 45th place with a time of 21:10.80. Other scorers for New Kent were Rosemarie Gilbride (63rd-22:16.30), Lauren Vick (64th- 22:17.20), Gabrielle Butler (77th-22:57.00), and Brooke Swarringim (79th-23:00.30).
