The 2021 home opener for New Kent High School’s Lady Trojans field hockey team pitted a rematch against the Monticello Lady Mustangs, a team they fell to a few days earlier 4-0 in the season premiere. The Sept. 2 rematch yielded a similar result. A shift in momentum by Monticello after a tied game was enough to propel the visitors to a 3-1 victory over the Lady Trojans. Jolisa Williams, a 2008 graduate of Charles City High School and former Lady Panther standout, has been named the Assistant Athletic Director for Media Relations at Bowie State University. Williams spent the previous six years at Shaw University in the same position and will take over for retiring Sports Information Director Gregory Goings. She was named the CIAA Sports Information Director of the Year in 2017 while employed by Shaw University. Charles City County High School announced the cancellation of Fall Athletics for the 2021 season. A New Kent teenager earned a top-five finish at the National Junior Olympics track and field meet in Houston, Texas, on Aug. 4. Lauren Curry finished fourth in the 13U girls’ high jump competition with a clearance of 4’9”. By finishing in the top five, she earned All-American status in the event.
New Kent siblings Lauren and Jayden Curry both earned two medals at the Virginia Commonwealth Track & Field Games held on July 24 at Liberty University. Lauren earned the gold medal in the Girls 13-14U high jump competition and earned a bronze in the girls’ 400-meter dash. Brother Jayden won the Boys 15-16U 1500-meter run and garnered a silver in the high jump competition.
Thoroughbred horse racing will return to New Kent County at Colonial Downs beginning Monday, July 19. The Colonial Downs Group enters its third year of racing in the Commonwealth of Virginia. Races will take place Monday-Wednesday, with $500,000 daily purses over a seven-week span that ends on Sept. 1.
