Cycling scholarship available for Charles City students grade 6-12

In partnership with the National Interscholastic Cycling Association (NICA) and Trek Bicycles, Charles City County Parks and Recreation Department has been awarded three BIPOC (Black, Indigenous, and Persons of Color) scholarships. Student-athletes from Charles City in grades 6-12 are eligible for the scholarship. The scholarship includes a bicycle, helmet, cycling kit, and 2021 registration fees. No experience is necessary but participation is required. An information meeting will take place on Monday, June 21, 6:30 p.m. at Lawrence Lewis Jr. Park in Charles City. Charles City places third to close out track and field regular season meet

D’Angelo Smith won the boys’ triple jump competition as Charles City’s Panthers earned a third-place finish at the May 27 track meet at Middlesex High School. Smith leaped a distance of 41’0½” to win the event for the visitors. Charles City accumulated 25 points for the bronze medal at the track meet. West Point won the gold with 93 points, with Middlesex taking silver with 72 points. King & Queen rounded out the scoring with 21 points. New Kent’s Julia Hathaway emerged as a double event winner as the Lady Trojans finished in a tie for second place at their May 26 home track meet. Hathaway earned victories in the girls’ triple jump with a leap of 33’9” and captured the 400-meter dash with a time of 1:01.06. Taking lumps in early years can be what establishes success down the line in athletics. New Kent’s Trojans are hoping that’s the case for this year’s soccer team.
