New Kent sibling Jayden and Lauren Curry both qualified for the Amateur Athletic Union (AAU) National Junior Olympic Track and Field Championships at North Carolina A&T University in Greensboro, North Carolina, by placing in the regional championships this past weekend at Hampton University. Jayden cleared a height of 5’0” to win the boys’ 13U age group, while sister won the girls’ 11U age division in the same event with a clearance of 4’0”. Jayden also placed fourth in the 1500-meter run (5:25), and Lauren placed sixth in the 800-meter run (2:54).
New Kent Lady Trojan softball outfielder McKenna Mueller and New Kent boys’ soccer midfielder Matteo Mecongeli were named to their respective Class 3A State first teams. Mueller was the only freshman to be named to the Class 3A state softball first team. Teammates Gracie Ellis (pitcher) and Taylor Yates (second base) were recognized to the Class 3A state second team. Mecongeli’s nomination was the top honor received by a Trojan soccer player at the state level. Teammates Spencer Gilland (forward) and Adam Caldwell (defender) were recognized as selections to Class 3A’s second team.
Colonial Downs have announced that general admission will be free for the upcoming horse racing season. Patrons will be able to attend the venue at no cost during the 15-day race season that spans from Aug. 8 to Sept. 7. Sometimes the toughest lessons are learned through defeat. For the New Kent Lady Trojans, it came earlier than expected during the June 4 state quarterfinal contest against the visiting Lady Hawks of Skyline High School. The visitors pushed two runs across the plate during the top frame of extra innings as Skyline escaped with a 4-2 victory over the homestanding Lady Trojans, ending their season. Two New Kent siblings excelled at the Virginia Beach Flames Invitational Track and Field meet held June 1 at New Kent High School. Jayden Curry emerged as a double-event winner at the competition, winning the high jump with a clearance of 4’8” and the 1500-meter run in a time of 5:15 in 13-14 boys’ age group. His sister, Lauren Curry, ran a time of 6:07 in the 1500-meter run to finish third in the 11-12 year old girls’ division at the meet.
Charles City’s Cameron Vaden placed on both the boys’ long and triple jump during Group 1A State Track and Field competition held on June 1 at East Rockingham High School. Vaden leaped a career best 20’1¾” in the long jump at the meet, finishing in seventh place. He followed that performance up by placing sixth in the boys’ triple jump with a mark of 39’5¾.” Vaden accounted for all five points for the boys’ team, as they finished in 31st. New Kent’s C.J. Reeders and Raven Harris emerged as state champions in their respective triple jump events at the Group 3A State Track and Field Championships held May 31-June 1 in Lynchburg. Reeders easily distanced himself to win his event, leaping 48’0” to become a back-to-back state champion in the event. Harris showed off her skills by jumping 38’0” to earn her title. Both athletes also broke school records along the way in the event. New Kent’s boys scored 26 points, finishing in 11th place at the meet.
