Traffic will be closed from the intersection of Carriage Road (Rt. 629) and Route 60 to the intersection of Olivet Church Road (Rt. 618) and Route 60. New Kent county leaders received a look at the first plans to bring high-speed Internet to the county. SCS Broadband representatives Lon Welchel and Clay Stewart appeared before the county’s board of supervisors at Wednesday morning’s work session. The broadband design presentation relayed an overview of plans to bring the service provider to New Kent. Stewart said plans are to provide unlimited data to residents with speeds ranging from 10-50 megabytes per second. Current plans utilize placing equipment on towers within the county. Charles City’s Board of Supervisors unanimously agreed to extend the deadline for personal property taxes to be paid by ten days. Taxes for the county are now due on Friday, Dec. 15. The decision to extend the date from Dec. 5 was made after citizens voiced concerns to county leaders through phone calls and the public comment period about the late arrival of the tax bills.
A voice recognition application on a Quinton man’s iPhone has landed him a one-year jail sentence. Jon Matthew Willis, 23, of the 6300 block of Hickory Road, received formal sentencing on one count each of possession of cocaine with intent to distribute and misdemeanor possession of marijuana during Nov. 27 New Kent Circuit Court proceedings. A Thanksgiving afternoon accident has resulted in one person being transported by helicopter to a local medical facility. Virginia State Police said shortly before 3 p.m., two individuals were pushing a disabled 1991 Ford Explorer with another steering the car on Route 60 (Pocahontas Trail) in New Kent around the 9000 block when it was struck by a 2012 Honda Civic from the rear. The two individuals pushing the vehicle sustained serious injuries, with one being transported by helicopter and the other by ambulance. The individual steering the disabled car was not injured. A loan for the construction of a New Elementary School accounts for the majority of funds to be used as part of a 2018-19 fiscal year Capital Improvement Plan proposal for New Kent County. County administrator Rodney Hathaway proposed a recommended CIP totaling $31 million to the county’s planning commission at Monday night’s meeting. Two men in unrelated cases have each been indicted on rape charges by a Charles City grand jury. Cordell Lamar Jones, 19, of the 3700 block of Lafayette Street, Hopewell, was indicted on one count of rape of a victim under the age of 13 during Nov. 14 proceedings in Charles City Circuit Court.
