Lady Trojans take down Bruton in overtime affair

After nearly three weeks isolated from the hardwood, New Kent’s Lady Trojans returned to the floor on Jan. 11, looking to sweep the invading Bruton Lady Panthers. It took some time, and an extra period, for the hosts to complete the task. Hohman named SoCon wrestler of the week

Blake Hohman, a 2015 graduate of New Kent High School, was named the Southern Conference “Wrestler of the Week” for Jan. 3-9. Hohman earned the honors by compiling a 4-1 record at the Franklin and Marshall Open, finishing third in the 165-pound weight class. The Virginia Military Institute junior scored his first two pins of the season at the tournament and leads the team in total wins with nine.

Gregory named to VSID all-state team

Wilson Gregory, a 2014 graduate of New Kent High School, was named to the Virginia Sports Information Directors’ College Division All-State Team. Gregory was an offensive lineman for the Averett Cougars, earning USA South First Team recognition during his senior year. He anchored an offensive line that produced the second most rushing yards and touchdowns in the conference. Gregory will graduate in 2018 and continue his education as a graduate assistant at the college.

New Kent outlasts rival West Point, ends losing streak

With only 14 miles separating the two schools, West Point and New Kent looked to continue a rivalry that has seen each team contributing to the intense battle. But for the Dec. 20 contest, it was the homestanding Trojans that found the win column before heading into the holiday break. For three quarters, both the Charles City Panthers and visiting Chincoteague Ponies played on even terms, exchanging scores and trading leads. But when that final frame rolled around, what was once a strong-wall of a defense by the hosting Panthers quickly came crumbling down.
